It was all about SEO or search engine optimization. When I first read about SEO and how it affected the position of websites on search results pages, I got the feeling that this was an atrocity. Search engines were forcing webmasters to create websites according to their whims and fancies and any webmaster who didn’t comply would be left in the lurk forced to use paid inclusion methods or PPC. So I set out to find the answer to this one basic question. Why SEO?

A much more efficient world wide web

One of the main reasons for the implementation of SEO is the need for a much more precise and efficient world wide web. When Google entered the scenario with its high tech algorithms and changed the world of search for ever, the internet was a place plagued by faulty designed websites and exaggerated marketing techniques. The quality websites were few and far between. Whenever a person searched for something, it was almost impossible to separate the good websites from the muck and the search results were a mix bag. SEO was an attempt by Google to separate the quality websites on the basis of several parameters. Here is a brief glimpse into some of these parameters.

• Content: The content on a website is one of the core factors that are taken into consideration whilst rating it. The content has to be informative, written in a conversational tone and relevant to the theme of the website.

• Site structuring: The website has to be structured in a way that is easy to use for web users as well as easy to scan through for search engine spiders.

• Meta Tags: Meta tags are an extremely important part of a website. There was a time when many types of meta tags were scanned by search engine algorithms.
