It may not have hurt me that much if the mistakes were committed by SEO beginners not yet familiar enough with the industry to determine SEO fact from SEO fiction. If your content is badly written or if it is off the topic than you can say that your website is not properly optimized for search engine. Search engines like Google and Yahoo gives more important to well written content and search engine spiders always looks for fresh content and rewards the sites with high rankings.

Improper Use Of Meta Tags: Improper use of meta tags or website without meta tags can misguide search engine and may cause improper listing for your website. Make sure to include these Meta tags in all page of your site, and target them for each individual page.

Use of Untargeted Keywords and Phrases: Almost every SEO effort revolves around the chosen keywords and lots of money and time is spent on obtaining a high ranking for the keywords. All the effort will go down the drain if you focus on the wrong keywords. Carefully study what keywords and key phrases your target market is using to find what you have to offer, and then optimise accordingly.

Wrong linking policy: Linking is a very potent SEO methodology, but only if done properly. Indiscriminate incoming and outgoing links can severely harm your search engine rankings. Try getting inbound links from reputed websites and never link to websites that are considered “bad”.
